We built the first virtual try-on for haute couture. Here's the story behind it, what it actually does, and why we think it's going to change the way you shop for evening dresses and wedding gowns online.
I'm going to be honest - this feature almost didn't happen.
When we first started talking about bringing virtual try-on to Sihëna, the reaction from most people around us was some version of "that's cool, but it won't work for couture." And I get it. A t-shirt is one thing. But a hand-embroidered evening gown? A bridal dress with layers of tulle and beadwork that catches light in a hundred different ways? That's a completely different challenge.
We built it anyway. And after months of late nights, failed prototypes, and way too many test renders, we got it right.
Today, if you visit any product page on sihena.ae, you'll see a "Virtual Try-On" button. Tap it, and within seconds you'll see the dress on your body. Not on an avatar. Not a rough sketch. On you. And it's accurate enough that it actually helps you decide.
That's the part that matters most to us.
What It Actually Does
Let me be specific, because "virtual try-on" can mean a lot of things, and most of what's out there isn't great. What we’ve built shows you how a garment sits on your body with real attention to fabric, fit, and silhouette. The way a sleeve drapes. How a neckline frames your shoulders. Whether that mermaid cut you’ve been eyeing actually works with your proportions or if maybe the A-line is your dress after all. It works across our full collection of evening dresses, our bridal gowns, and everything in between. No app to download, no complicated setup. Just tap and see.
I know every brand says their product “just works.” But we tested this obsessively, and the feedback from early users has been the thing I’m most proud of. Women are telling us they feel more confident ordering, not less. That was the whole point.
The Google Connection
Under the hood, we’re using Google’s Virtual Try-On technology.
But here’s the thing - Google built that tech for mass-market fashion.
Basic silhouettes, flat fabrics, simple cuts. It’s impressive for what it is, but haute couture has needs that off-the-shelf solutions don’t account for. So our engineering team spent months adapting the system. We had to rethink how the pipeline handles fabric transparency, weight, texture, embellishment density. A beaded bodice doesn’t behave like cotton. A layered tulle skirt has volume that a jersey dress doesn’t. These might sound like small details, but in couture, small details are the whole game.
The result: Sihëna is the first online haute couture house with a try-on this accurate, built directly into the product page. No redirects, no separate app. It lives where you’re already shopping.
Why This Matters (Especially If You've Ever Shopped For An Evening Gown Online)
Here’s something that no one ever talks about: shopping for a couture evening dress or a designer wedding gown online is stressful.
These aren’t impulse buys. You’re choosing the dress you’ll wear to a wedding, a gala, a once-in-a-lifetime event.
You’ll be photographed in it. You’ll remember it. The pressure is on. And until now, you’ve had to make that decision based on photos of someone else wearing the dress. You’d zoom in, try to imagine the proportions on you, and then… hope for the best.
That gap between “it’s looks beautiful on her” and “will it look beautiful on me” is where so much hesitation lives.
That’s the gap we’re closing.
If you’re a bride looking for your wedding dress, you can now browse our entire bridal collection from your couch at 2am - trying on pieces like Noor Draped Serenity or Celestine Crest, side by side comparing, screenshotting your favorites to send to your sister or your bestie. No appointment pressure. No sales associate hovering. Just you and the dress.
If you’re hunting for the right gala gown, a formal dinner or an engagement party rather - you can actually see how a floor length (black dress from Noir Enigma) reads on your body versus something warmer from (Cocoa & Bronze Columns), or something bold from (Verdant Reverie). That kind of comparison took three trips to a boutique.
And if you’re looking for a celebration dress - a graduation, a henna night, an award ceremony, anything you want to walk in and feel like the best version of yourself at, try something like (Jade Opulence) or (Teal Sovereign). See it on your body. Then decide.
You know what I learned early on?
Most of my clients don’t discover me us walking into a store. They find us on Instagram, or from a friend, or by googling designer evening dresses at one in the morning at a place they need to dressed for when. They’re in Dubai, Riyadh, Doha, Kuwait City, Bahrain, and increasingly, everywhere else. They want the online experience to be as good as the clothes are, and to be honest, we don’t think it was before this feature - product photos are gorgeous but tell half the story.
The Atelier Isn't Going Anywhere
We need to stress this: virtual try-on is not usurping the fitting process. The hands of a tailor, the way a dress feels slipping over your body for the first time, that moment you see yourself in the mirror - that’s precious, and we would never forget that.
But not every client can hop on a plane to Dubai for a fitting. And even if they can, they want to do their due diligence first. A bride in Jeddah should be able to get to know her wedding dress on her body, not just on an anonymous model. A woman in Kuwait looking for a couture evening gown for a royal wedding shouldn’t have to guess. A client in Bahrain dressing for an awards night should do better than a flat product image and wish. Virtual try-on is the connector.
We’re not taking the atelier from you - we’re sending it out into the wider digital world.
